As it is National Apprenticeship Week 2024, we delve into the heart of apprenticeship education with Tracey Woolsgrove, an esteemed figure in the field. With over two decades of experience in apprenticeships, Tracey shares her insights, motivations, and the transformative power of apprenticeship programmes for both learners and employers.

Meet Tracey Woolsgrove

Tracey Woolsgrove, the Apprenticeship Manager at Sutton & District Training, wears her passion for apprenticeships like a badge of honour. Additionally, she runs her own independent training provider, Willows End Training. Her journey into the world of apprenticeships began at the tender age of 17 when she embarked on her own apprenticeship journey in Business Administration at a small electronics company in Chessington, Surrey. "I completed my levels 2 & 3 Apprenticeships in Business Administration," Tracey shares, "and about 8 years later, I trained to become an Assessor myself. The rest, as they say, is history!"

A Personal Journey

Tracey's journey into the world of apprenticeships was no coincidence; it was deeply personal. Reflecting on her own experience, she shares, "My apprenticeship was just something my employer offered me, and I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to develop further and gain some new qualifications alongside my job which I loved." This personal experience fuelled her desire to become an Assessor, driven by the belief that apprenticeships offer invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Benefits for Learners and Employers

For Tracey, the benefits of apprenticeship programmes are clear for both learners and employers. "As a learner," she explains, "it's the perfect way to 'earn while you learn' and gain hands-on experience that you can never gain from college or university." Apprenticeships offer a pathway to industry knowledge, social skills, independence, and a clear career trajectory. Meanwhile, employers benefit from shaping a workforce tailored to their specific needs, fostering loyalty, and reducing recruitment costs.

Bridging the Skills Gap

In today's rapidly evolving workforce, apprenticeships play a crucial role in bridging the skills gap. Tracey emphasises that apprenticeships offer practical, industry-specific learning experiences, ensuring individuals acquire skills directly applicable to their industry's demands. Moreover, apprenticeships are versatile, enabling companies to address specific skill shortages and attract a diverse range of talent.

Tailored Teaching Strategies

When it comes to guiding apprentices through their training, Tracey emphasises the importance of personalised teaching strategies. "The benefit of a good training provider," she explains, "is that they can adapt their teaching strategies to meet the needs and preferences of each learner." Understanding each apprentice's unique circumstances, preferences, and learning styles is key to delivering effective training.

Advice for Apprentices

For aspiring apprentices, Tracey offers invaluable advice. "Actively seek opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills," she urges. "Take the initiative, cultivate relationships, and view feedback as a constructive tool for growth." By staying committed, proactive, and receptive to feedback, apprentices can maximize their training experience and unlock their full potential.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

As an Assessor, staying connected with industry trends is paramount for Tracey. From completing her own Level 5 apprenticeship in teaching to attending industry events and reading industry articles, Tracey ensures she remains up-to-date with the latest developments. This commitment to continuous learning allows her to provide relevant and impactful tutoring in apprenticeships.

Measuring Success

While many measure success in apprenticeships by timely completion, Tracey takes a more holistic approach. "Success," she believes, "is measured by how far a learner has developed during their apprenticeship." Whether it's securing a permanent job, developing new skills, or discovering their true passion, every milestone is a testament to success.

A Legacy of Excellence

Over the years, Tracey has witnessed countless apprentices excel and make significant contributions to their industries. From completing multiple apprenticeships to securing promotions, each success story reaffirms the transformative power of apprenticeship programmes.

As National Apprenticeship Week 2024 celebrates the impact of apprenticeships, Tracey's journey serves as a testament to the boundless opportunities they offer. With her unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence, Tracey continues to shape the future of apprenticeship education, one learner at a time.
